Beautiful Borneo

I looked at the calendar and realized this week was my anniversary- 6 months.  Six months since everything changed.   And six months since I've been to a meeting in a language that I really understand, so when some of my adopted family invited me to come visit, and attend an English circuit assembly and pioneer meeting together, it sounded like a dream!  Just a few clicks of the mouse, and a few short flights later...  I was standing in Sarawak- the southern province of East Malaysia, on the Island of Borneo- the land of giant jurassic-park-style rain forests, and tiny tiny cars! / Vi el calendarío y me di cuenta que ésta semana ha sido mi aniversario- 6 meses.  Seis meses desde que todo cambío.  Y seis meses desde que escucho una reúnion en un idioma que puedo entender.  Entonces cuando mi familia adoptiva me invitó a visitar, y asistir a una asamblea y reunion de precursores en Inglés, me parecía como un sueño.  Poco despúes estuve parada en Sarawak- la provinica suroeste de Malaysia, en la isla de Borneo... la tierra de selvas enormes y carros muy muy chiquitos.  

I arrived first in the city of Kuching.  A beautiful, sleepy little town full of unusual character and random cat statues everywhere you look.  (The word "Kuching" means "cat" in the local language).  I'm told the locals will often dress this one up for the holidays. /  Llegué primero en la ciudad de Kuching, una cuidad chiquita, hermosa; llena de cultura... y estatuas de gatos!  (la palabra "Kuching" significa "gato" en el idioma local)  Me dicen que la gente le pone ropa a este estatua durante los días feriados. 

   

I loved being at that assembly.  The circuit includes all the English congregations in Sarawak and Brunei (a tiny, oil-rich country you might never have heard of, where the work is under ban).  I met some long-time pioneers here, among the very first witnesses in this area, and got to hear their stories.  (Some wild stuff!)  The assembly was held in the banquet room of a local hotel, with a peak attendance of 244 on Sunday and 8 deaf.  Here's a picture of our little sign language section. / Me encantó estar en la asamblea.  Era el circuito para todas las congregaciones Inglés de Sarawak y Brunei (un pais chiquito, petrolero, donde la obra esta proscrita).  Conocí a unos hermanos y hermanas que han sido precursores desde hace mucho tiempo atras.  Unos de ellos fueron entre los primeros testigos en este zona, y tenían experiencias incréibles.  La asamblea se celebró en un hotel y hubo una asistencia de 244 el día Domingo, con 8 sordos.  Aqui esta una foto de nuestro pequeño grupo de no oyentes. 

Some of the friends here were also at our DC in Cambodia last year, and saw my struggle to interpret a couple of pretty difficult talks.  So, when they told me I was on the interpreting schedule for this assembly- a talk on Babylon the Great no less- I was really sure they were only teasing.   But no.  I was kinda surprised to find they were, in fact, completely serious!  So with a long prayer and a short ASL vocab lesson, I think I survived ;)  Actually, I felt privileged to get to help out; and it was a good opportunity to get experience and learn from real interpreters at work. / Unos de los hermanos que asistieron, tambien fueron a la asamblea de districto en Camboya, y me vieron luchar con traducir unos discursos dificíles.  Entonces cuando me dijieron que iba a traducir en este asamblea- un discurso sobre Babilonia la Grande- supe que estuviero bromeando no más.  Pero, no.  Imagínate mi sorpresa cuando llegué a saber no fue broma!  Bueno, con una oracion largo u una leccion de señas breve, creo que sobreviví. jaja!  Realmente, me sentí como me habian dado un privilejio grande, y una buena oportunidad para adquirir experencia y ver como trabajan los intérpretes veraderos.

The kindness and hospitality of the brothers and sisters I met in East Malaysia is legendary.  A special pioneer brother and his wife picked me up at the airport, let me stay at their house, and generously provided an over-abundance of everything I could possibly imagine.  Every day at the assembly, people I had just met had made lunches for me, and even brought me coffee.  In the evening, we were either invited out on the town or to someone's home for an elaborate home cooked meal.  I felt like I had a royal tour of the place.  And when it was time to say goodbye, I left loaded with little cards, gifts and souvenirs from my new friends. I have to say, the physical beauty of Sarawak fades in comparison with the beauty that radiates from within the hearts of  brothers and sisters who live here. / El amor y la hospitalidad de los hermanos que conocí en malaysia fue increíble.  Un precursor especail y su esposa me fueron a ver en el aeropuerto, me dejaron quedar en su casa, y brindaron una sobreabundancia de todo lo yo que podia imaginar.  Todos los días en la asamblea, unos hermanos que apenas habia conocido se preocuparon de traerme almuerzo, y hasta el café!  En las noches nos invitaron a comer en restaurantes, o una comida especail en casa.  Me sentí como me dieron un tour réal de la ciudad. Y cuando fue tiempo para despedirnos,  salí cargada con cartitas, regalitos y recuerdos de mis nuevos amigos.  Tengo que decir que la hermosura fisica de este lugar no es nada comparada con la hermosura que brilla desde los corazones de los hermanos y hermanas aqui.

After the assembly was over, a group of us went to the Tolong Senyap National Park, where they have a rehabilitation and breeding center for wild Orangutans.  / Cuando la asamblea se habia terminado, nos fuimos a la Tolong Senyap parque national, donde hay un centro de reabilitación para monos Orangutang. 

It's one of the few places in the world where you can sit and watch sights like this unfold. The animals here are by no means tame, but the rangers do leave out food for them, and so they've built-up a tolerance for enthusiastic photographers (as long as you show proper respect for the king!)./ Es unos de los ultimos lugares en el planeta donde te puedes sentar y mirar escenas como estas.  Los animales que vivan aqui no son domesticados para nada, pero si se los ponen comida.  Entonces ellos han aprendido tolerar los fotgrafos entusiasticos como nosotros (con tal que demuestras el respeto debido al rey!)

Because we were a big group, and buses to the park are a little sketchy, several local brothers offered their cars.  We also enlisted the help of a brother who owns a taxi.   We had every intention of paying the normal fare for the trip, but when we were finished, he refused to take any money from us. And even insisted on paying for everyone's lunch!  The food was very good, but I gotta say, this area has some of the weirdest combinations I've ever seen.  This is an excerpt from the menu at "My Small Eat Cafe". / Éramos un grupo grande y los buses que van a este lugar no son confiables, entonces unos hermanos nos ayudaron con sus carros.  Tambien había un hermano que trabaja con un taxi.  Tuvimos toda entencion de pagarle por el viaje, pero cuando terminamos, el rehuso tomar nuestro dinero, y hasta insistío pagar por nuestro almuerzo!  La comida fue rica, pero este país tiene unas de las comidas más raras que he visto jamás!  Este es una pajina del restaurante "Mi Pequeno Comer Café".  La ultima linea quiere decir sopa de labios de pescados!

It's kind of ironic that the people here are so sweet, because not so very long ago this area was home to the most fierce head-hunting tribes in the world.  This is what the inside of a traditional long-house home looks like.  That's right folks, those are real human skulls dangling from the rafters! / Es un poco ironíco que la gente de Borneo sean tan dulces, porque no hace tanto tiempo, este area fue hogar para los tribus cazadoes de cabezes más feroces del mundo.  Este es como se ve una casa típica.  Si señor, son cabezas verdaderos gindodos de los estacas.

I stayed a week in the south, and then we flew north to the town of Miri; just a stones-throw away from the border of Brunei.  From Miri it's another 30 minute flight on a tiny prop plane into the heart of Borneo.  My destination was Gurung Mulu National Park.  That's where you'll find some of the most pristine jungles left on the planet and the world's largest network of underground caves. / Me quedé en el sur por una semana y despues volamos al pueblo de Miri, en el norte, cerca de Brunei.  De este lugar, solo era 30 minutos más en un avion pequeño hasta llegar al corazon de Borneo.  Mi destino era Gurung Mulu Parque National, donde encuentras junglas virgines y el sistema de cuevas más grandes del mundo. 

I've been so busy in Phnom Pehn,  I'd forgotten how much I miss being in the forest... / He estado tan ocupada ultimamente, que casi me olvido como me amo estar en el bosque...

There are a lot of plant and animal species that are endemic to this island, like these giant pitcher plants.   I found a lot of them on my walks; no two plants were the same. / Hay muchas especias de plantas y animales que solo se encuentran en este isla,  como esta planta gigante de jarros.  Encontre algunas durante mi caminadas, pero no habian dos iguales.

All the critters around here are super-sized too. This giant tree frog was hysterical.  I really think it knew it was posing for a photo shoot.  / Todos los bichitos por qui son gigantes tambien.  Este rana gigante fue super chistoso.  Parece que el habia trabajado como modelo profesional antes. 

Stretched-out, this centipede was more than a foot long! / Este cienpies era más larga que mi pie!

I guess you'd call this a Malaysian house fly? / Supongo que esto se llama mosca malaysiana?

I took so many pictures on this trip, but there's just no way they can do it justice,  These trees are enormous! / Tomé tantas fotos, pero no pueden capturar el ambiente verdadero.  Estos arboles son enormes!

There's a very famous 3-day trek in this park to see some jagged limestone cliffs known as the "pinnacles".  Sadly, I didn't have enough time to go,  but instead I found a mini version to climb around on that was almost a good! :) / hay un camino de trés días para ver unas formaciones de piedras famosas que se llaman los Pinnacles.  Lamentablemente no tuve tiempo para ir, pero encontré una version pequeña donde devirtirme. 

The water in the ponds and rivers here is clear, but it has this bright green (sometimes almost radioactive yellow) looking glow to it.  The color just adds to the mystery... makes you wonder what could be in there... / El agua es clara, pero tiene un resplandor verde (a veces como un color amarillo radiocativo) que añade al misterio del lugar... que te provoca pensar en lo que podria estar adentro...

Because pretty much anything could be in there!  At one of the museums we visited in Kuching, there's an exhibit about things they've found inside crocodile's stomachs;  like wristwatches for example.  Not to worry though...  I'm pretty sure this one was strictly vegetarian. / Porque casi cualquier cosa podria estar adentro!  En uno de los museos que visité en Kuching tienen una exibicion sobre cosas que habian encontrado dentro de estomagos de cocodrillos- como relojes!  Pero no te preocupes, estoy casi segura que este cocodrillo era vegetariano no más.

One of the best views of the forest is the one that usually only birds and butterflies get to see.  The park has a string of catwalks through the canopy more than 400m long and an average of 30m high.  A great place to see a day begin. / Uno de las mejores vistas en el bosque es uno que normalmente solo pueden disfrutar los pajeros y los mariposas.  El parque tiene unos puentes sospendidos 30 metros de altura y 400 metros larga.  Es un lugar ideal para ver el dia comenzar.

The trick was to walk very still, like balancing on a high wire.  Even the slightest swinging or vibrations on the bridges would shake the trees and scares away the animals.  Easier said than done! / El truco era caminar sin moverse mucho.  Solo un respiro de vibraciones hacia mover los arboles y asustar a los animales.  Es más facil decirlo que hacerlo!

The forest was incredible, but the most spectacular and unique part of Mulu are the caves.  This is Deer Cave, which boasts the largest cave passage in the world.  You know that BBC Planet Earth documentary on caves?  The one that shows a cockroach-encrusted pile of bat guano over 100 meteres high...?   Ya, this is the place! / El bosque fue increible, pero lo mejor de Mulu son las cuevas.  Este es Deer Cave, que tiene el tunel mas grande del mundo.  Y adentro hay un montón de caca de murcielago más de 100 metros de altura!

It's hard to tell size from the picture, but this cave passage is big enough to land a jumbo jet inside. / Es dificil entender tel tamano real, pero este cueva es tan grande que podría aterorizar un avion adentro. 

Near the mouth of the cave live an estimated 3 million bats.  How many bats is that? / Cerce de  la boca, viven  casi 3 millones de murcielagos.  Cuantos son 3 millones?

To help put it into perspective, at dusk, as the bats leave for the night, you can look up at the sky and see them flying like a ribbon across the sky .  This exodus continues, in an almost unbroken stream of bats, for more than an hour!  Sitting there watching, you start to get the feeling that it's never going to end.  Together they can eat 15 tonnes of insects every night.  /  Bueno, para ayudarte entender, todas las noches cuando ellas salen, puedes verlas volando como una cuerda en el cielo.  El exodo continua, casi sin parar, durante más de una hora.  Cuando los ves, parece que nunca van a terminar de salir.  En total, ellas pueden comer más de 15 toneladas de insectos totas las noches. 

In total, I spent parts of 3 days exploring a world below the forest floor.  Nearly every inch of it is frosted with colorful, bizzare, and elegant rock formations.  There are plenty of routes here that are well-equipped with lights, stairs, and convenient concrete sidewalks... but for those who don't mind getting a little dirty, there's SO much more to see! / En total, pasé casi tres días explorando un mundo debajo de la jungla.  Casi todo cenimetro es adornado con formaciones de piedras interesantes y elegantes.  Hay muchos caminos con luces, escaleras, y veredas de cemento... pero si no te molesta ensuciarte un poco, hay MUCHO más para ver!

I did a little bit of-  the park calls it "adventure" caving-  It was... what can I say? Super cool!!  One part was a little sketchy though.... it involved walking on tippy toes across the tops of several, very high, stalagmite formations and then repelling into a deep black hole.  The rocks were wet and the old rope slathered with mud; there were no safety lines... ya, it was just a tiny bit scary. / Fui a explorar un poco.  Y fue... que te puedo decir? In-Cre-Íble!! Solo una parte no me gustó tanto.  Tenia que caminar en los puntos de mis pies sobre unas rocas altas y finas,  y despúes descender con sogas en un hueco negro profundo.  Las rocas estaban mojadas y el cabo cubierto con lodo.... si, me dío un poquito de miedito. 

We were supposed to make our way left, and into a shallow crevasse that gave route down to level ground.  But imagine my surprise when I arrived to find that someone else was already hanging out in there.  My options were: A.) Get up-close and personal with this bad boy, or B.) Plummet to my death.  ...I had to stop and think about it for a minute.  / Había que avanzar hacia la izquierda hasta legar a una aperatura, donde habia como descender al fondo.  Pero imaginate mi sorpresa cuando llegué y ví que alguien más estaba allí.  Entonces, mi opciones eran A.) tener un encuentro personal con este tipo feo, o B.) cayer al muerto seguro.  ....tenía que pensarlo un minuto.

Deep inside the caves were tons of bats, swiftlets, snakes, crabs... all sorts of weird little critters that never see the light of day. / Al fondo en la cueva habia millones de murcielagos, parajos especiales, culebras, cangrejos... muchos bichitos que nunca han visto la luz del día.

My last day there I spent walking alone in the jungle... after going maybe 3 or 4km I eventually came into a sunny clearing... crossed a road, up a few steps, and into the airport.  (If you can call it an airport)  It's just a thin little building lining one side of a solitary airstrip bulldozed out of the trees.  A few random people were milling around here and there.  Down at one end was something of a cafeteria; so I took a seat at a plastic picnic table and had hot coffee served in a mason jar.  There wasn't an airplane in sight. / Mi ultimo día, fui a caminar sola en la jungla... despúes de 3 o 4km salí de los arboles... crucé la calle, subí una gradas, y entré en el aeropuerto (si es que lo puedes llamar aeropuerto)  Era un edeficio fino, frente de una pista soletaria cortada del bosque.  Unas cuantas personas estaban vagando por alli.  Al fondo, habia algo como un comedor, entonces tomé un asiento en una de sus sillas plasticas y me dieron un café caliente en un vaso.  No alcancé ver ni un solo avion.

So I waited.  One hour... two hours... and then out of nowhere the silence was broken by something with propellers falling from the clouds.  It screamed down the runway, turned around, and then ever so slowly grumbled it's way up to a door painted with the word "departure".  Only one guy in a yellow vest seemed to have noticed it's arrival.  For a moment I was lost.  Like I had stepped into a scene out of an old black and white movie or something.   When... and entire bus load of particularly  loud Chinese tourists descended upon the place and began pushing and shoving their way to the front of the line.  Just like that, the moment was gone and I was back in the South East Asia that's come to feel so familiar to me already. / Entonces esperé. Una hora... dos horas... cuando de repente, algo calló del cielo y lentamente llegó a parquearse de frente de una puerta pintada con la palabra salida.  Parece que un solo hombre con un chaleco amarillio, se dío cuenta de su llegada. Por un momento, me perdí.  Como que había sido transportada dentro de una película vieja blanco y negro o algo.  Cuando... llegó un bus lleno de turistas chinas, haciendo mucha bulla, y todos empezaron a empujarse al frente de la cola.  Y, mi momento nostalgico se perdio, y volví al mundo típico de Asia.

Back in Miri, there were a few days left to spend with friends.  There is one deaf sister who's lived here for years, and a couple of  "temporary residents" who're working very hard, and doing a great job to build up enthusiasm in the sign language field.  On Sunday we had a Sign Language Watchtower study with about 10 people in attendance.  After that, the rest of the congregation joined us for a special ASL public talk, that was also voiced in Bahasa Malay for the hearing folk. / regresando a Miri, me quedaron algunos días para disfrutar con amigos.  Hay una hermana no oyente quien ha vivido aqui por años, y unos resedentes temporarios quienes estan trabajando duro tratando de regar ánimo en el campo de señas.  El día Domingo, tuvimos un estudio de la Atalaya en señas con uas diez personas en asistencia.  Despúes el resto de la congregacion llego para un discurso publico especial en señas, que tembien fue traducida en el idioma local (Bahasa Malay) para los hermanos oyentes.

My friends there were such amazing hosts, and they were so kind to use their time and money to take me sight-seeing everywhere.  We went to the beach, the mountaintops, the historic part of town, and Lambir Hills National Park, where there are some beautiful trails, waterfalls, and a place to swim.  / Mis amigos fueron antifiltrones increibles, y fuerono tan amables para llevarme por todos lados para conocer el lugar.  Fuimos a la playa, la cima de las montañas, el pueblo historico, y Lambir Hills parque nacional donde hay cascadas y un llugar para nadar. 

Also on the "To Do" list in Miri:  Go exploring in a Chinese medicine store; Shop for Wasabi seaweed at E-Mart [Pretty much the best place ever! Picture Wal-mart, China Town, and a garage sale all rolled into one!], And practice driving on the "wrong" side of the road. (shifting gears with my left hand and trying to remember not to confuse the blinkers with the windshield wipers! haha ) / Además habia que explorar tiendas de medcinas chinas, mercados interestantes,  y practicar manejar por en lado "equivocado" de la carretera.  Cambiando con la mano izquierda y tratando a no confundir las cosas.

The little mushroom in this picture was in the woods, just outside of Miri.  It probably wasn't much bigger than my fingernail and certainly would've been easy enough to have walked right past without ever even having seen it.  There's nothing special about it really.  But I'm glad I did see it.  Sometimes, the most tiny and insignificant things turn out to be the most amazing... and from that amazement we can awaken inspiration.   All we have to do is take the time to look around us with appreciative eyes. / El pequeño champigion en este foto estaba en un bosque cerca de Miri.  Probablemente no fue mucho más grande que mi uña y hubiera sido facil pasar caminando sin verlo. Realmente el no tiene nada especial.  Pero me alegro que si lo ví.  A veces, la cosa más pequeña y insignificante resulta ser el más fascinante... y de esta fascinacion podemos despertar nuesta inspiracion.  Solo tenemos que tomar la molestia de mirar alrededor con ojos apreciativos.
