hometown weddings and wigs

Well, here I am.... back in America.  When I arrived, it was springtime on the east coast.  That means apple blossoms and the dazzling greens of leaves unfolding.  It's the smell of freshly cut grass and berry fields kissed with rain....

It was me and the sock monkey on long, long highway.

By now, I've come to expect that my life will be busy and unpredicatable.... but this may have been my craziest month ever.   According to mapquest, since landing in NYC  I've covered more than 5,650 miles!  To put it another way, that's roughly like driving from New York to Egypt  ...and it's not over yet!

This is more-or-less what I did last month /  Donde he estado, mas o menos

I've spent my entire adult life living abroad, and living very, very far from my family.  So, this past month was a tiny bit of catching-up for lost time....  It was more than slightly crazy... but sometimes these are the things we do for the people we care about; and the things they do for us.  So, after going through customs in NYC, my next destination was Atlanta Georgia, for my brother's wedding.

Everything is so different here in America.  It's all shiny and polished; instant and automated.  Also there seem to be no stray cows wandering around anywhere!?  (It's very strange)  I guess the trip still always brings  a little bit of culture shock for me...  hard to explain....  I'm going to blame this photo on the jet lag.

It was a treat to have four generations of my family together in one place.   That doesn't happen too often.  With my niece and nephew, it'll be 5 generations who've known Jehovah.

Sir Isaac Newton's third law of motion states that 'for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction'.   Sometimes I think that must mean that for every good thing that happens to us, something bad must happen too.  At least, that's the way it feels some days.  The longer I live, the more I'm impressed with what Job said at Job 2:10 "Shall we accept merely what is good from the [true] God and not accept also what is bad?  In all this Job did not sin with his lips."  ...This trip has seen sadness;  funerals, emergency rooms, heavy hearts, and then some......   But there were plenty of  fun things too; like riding on roller coasters...

Going out in service here has been really fun too.  This area has a lot of international business and so you never know who you'll meet behind the doors.   Lately, I've been getting the opportunity to have some nice conversations with Muslim people; I even met a fascinating woman from Pakistan who gave me a copy of the Quran to read.

Over the last few weeks there's been meetings in Portuguese, phone calls in Cambodian, service in Spanish ....English, Sign, Karen and Cambodian too.   I've never had a problem getting my languages confused before, but jumping states and cultures so fast, has my brain completely scrambled! haha  Lately, there's no telling what will come out when I open my mouth!

I made stops in Florida, Virginia, and DC to see family and friends.  There were quick breakfast rendezvous, leisurely diners on the water,  long, late-night chats by the campfire...

Another beautiful family wedding.  Except for the fact that it started pouring and POURING sheets of rain the at the same time the bridal party was trying to get to the hall, it seemed absolutely perfect.

Man, if this tree could talk!  well..... we'd have to cut it down! :)

Upstate New York has always been a nice place to come home to.  The brothers and sisters in the congregations around here are always so encouraging and supportive when it comes to serving where the need is greater.  I often get asked to share stories, show pictures, or give a little assistance to other pioneers who would like to go where the need is great too.  This year I had the really special privilege of being interviewed at the District Convention about what it's been like to pioneer in foreign countries.

The way the circuits were divided this year, I felt like really didn't know that many people in the audience at this convention.  But after the program,  I thought it was amazing how many people approached me with appreciation, or to share some exciting experiences of their own.   I find it inspiring to see people's eyes light up with enthusiasm when they talk about spiritual things and working for Jehovah.  I've really been blessed to be in the company of some amazing people here.

Well, it's been fun, but  my time back is quickly drawing to a close.  But before I go, there's just a couple  of things left to do...

Survival Skills

It's 12:55am and I'm in a coffee shop somewhere.... time seems to have lost it's meaning lately.  I have no idea what day it is, and I'd have to consult my passport to tell you what country I'm in. (China, I think??)  I should have another espresso.  But I'm getting ahead of myself.  Here's how it started...

April is always a busy month because of the Memorial and all the auxiliary pioneers.... unfortunately, I spent the first half with a nasty eye infection, and wasn't nearly as busy as I would've liked to have been.  This year the Memorial date fell at the same time as the Cambodian New Year.  A lot of people travel during that holiday season, so the attendance wasn't quite as high as we expected...  but still pretty good. Where I was,  two congregations rented this convention center, with a total attendance of 449 (12 deaf students ).  One brother in my hall rented a truck to provide transportation for some of his return visits, and 40 people came from an outlying area.

My friend Lynda has some really nice photos online of the memorial celebration in the countryside of Takeo, where she and her husband are pioneering.

Being in Cambodia has meant lots of new things to figure out.  And for the most part, you have to just learn on the job.  My most recently acquired survival skill was:  how to drive a motorcycle in a monsoon.

I'd never driven in floodwaters like that before, and really had no clue what do.  In the first 2 minutes my bike stalled twice and I nearly got hit by cars.  The entire engine was under water and I didn't even think it was physically possible to keep going!  There were frantic drivers and stranded vehicles everywhere.  Lightning was striking all around the city.  My friend Chelsea was up ahead, and through the sound of pouring rain and blairing car horns was yelling advice over her shoulder.  "KEEP YOUR RPMs UP!!"... "DON'T STOP!!!"  Well, the next spark I could coax from the engine, I did like she said... put it in first gear and pulled back on the gas until the engine was screaming like I'd never heard before.  And..... it worked!  The little bike sputtered, and choked, and... plowed through the water like a jet ski!  It was definitely the best adventure I'd had all day. ..."NO TE PARES!!!"

I tried to get better pictures of the flooding- snap a few while driving- but they're mostly just a blurry mess.  I took this one when I finally stopped, on the street in front of my house.  It wasn't too bad here.  The  black water in the road is about 12 in deep and the bike is on the sidewalk.

Another skill that comes in really handy, is the ability to graciously eat whatever you may be served.  When a sister asked if I 'ate duck', I said "sure!".  But I never imagined that she meant the whole entire duck!  This was a very special meal that our sister had taken a lot of her precious time and money to prepare.  The duck was, crispy.  And the lovely afternoon spent with friends- that was priceless.

In Cambodia, you learn to be resourceful.   For example, propane gas for the stove is really expensive, so I've been learning to cook food the traditional way; over a charcoal fire built in a one of these terracotta pots.

Sometimes, it's not the money to buy gas that's a problem, as much as finding a way to get tanks of it up onto the roof of my building.   So, when the going gets tough...   I discovered it takes 5 candles and half an hour to make a pot of coffee.

I think sometimes as teachers, we wonder how much of what we're saying (or attempting to say, in my case) is really getting through into the minds and hearts of our students.  But a few weeks ago I had a revealing experience...

In the Cambodian language, the words "Christian" and sometimes "Christendom" can be referred to as "Religion [of] Jesus", which sometimes causes confusion.  During the Watchtower study, my student tapped my arm so that I would see as she wrote the words "LORD JESUS" in big letters at the top of the page, with a cross next to it...

...and then she proceeded to confidently draw a big "X" through it!  ("WRONG!" she signs to me)  Then she points to the picture of the church and puts a big "X" through that too.  Finally she circles the pictures of the person in the foreground, turns to me with a smile, and gives a HUGE 'two-thumbs-up' sign.  It was so unexpected and funny that I almost laughed out loud!  I knew what she meant to say.... but I also wanted to make it clear that actually Jesus is not bad.  We do not need to cross-out his name in the magazine; only avoid those who misrepresent him.  She rolled her eyes at me.  "I know" she said "I understand the bible now!"  (hehe)  It was absolutely adorable.

This has been a month for parties too.   There are some friends who're leaving soon, and also my congregation (Toul Kork) is going to divide, starting in May.  The two new congregations will be called Tuk T'La and Phnom Pehn Tmey.  In 2 years and 8 months, the city has gone from having 2 congregations to 5; and it already looks like there's more on the way!  So, we've had a few gatherings to say our goodbyes to eachother...

This was my goodbye dinner. / Esto fue mi despedida.

If you're reading this, then you probably already know about the reasons that are taking me back to the US for a while.....

Since I'd been planning on moving apartments next month anyway,  I decided to condense my life into this pile of boxes and leave it all in storage while I'm gone.  So, before I knew it, my bags were packed and it was time to go...

I'd gotten a really great deal on a flight leaving from Bangkok, so I traveled overland to Thailand.  On the way, I stopped to spend a few days with friends in Battambang.  This is the missionary home, where I stayed; A charming old wooden house, left over from the French Colonial era.

The downstairs is used as the kingdom hall.

I spent some time out in service there.  These kids were adorable. /  Fui a predicar con los hermanos.  Estos niños eran lindos.

And just observing scenes of typical Cambodian country life.

While out in service, we passed a nice family who make their living by selling roasted rats on the side of the road.  One rat costs $200 Cambodian Riel; the equivalent of about $.05 US.  So, you can imagine they've got to catch & cook a lot of rodents in order to pay the bills.  And, of course, being the friendly people that they were, they wanted to give us a little sample.  And so....  I hate to admit this, but it was actually good; as in good enough to eat again.

...and so 4 days, 3 bus rides, 54 hours of airports, and one armed border conflict later, I'd wake-up in America again.

So long Cambodia.  Next stop, South Carolina...
Hasta la vista Camboya.  Proxima parada, Carolina del Sur...

Beautiful Borneo

I looked at the calendar and realized this week was my anniversary- 6 months.  Six months since everything changed.   And six months since I've been to a meeting in a language that I really understand, so when some of my adopted family invited me to come visit, and attend an English circuit assembly and pioneer meeting together, it sounded like a dream!  Just a few clicks of the mouse, and a few short flights later...  I was standing in Sarawak- the southern province of East Malaysia, on the Island of Borneo- the land of giant jurassic-park-style rain forests, and tiny tiny cars!

I arrived first in the city of Kuching.  A beautiful, sleepy little town full of unusual character and random cat statues everywhere you look.  (The word "Kuching" means "cat" in the local language).  I'm told the locals will often dress this one up for the holidays.

I loved being at that assembly.  The circuit includes all the English congregations in Sarawak and Brunei (a tiny, oil-rich country you might never have heard of, where the work is under ban).  I met some long-time pioneers here, among the very first witnesses in this area, and got to hear their stories.  (Some wild stuff!)  The assembly was held in the banquet room of a local hotel, with a peak attendance of 244 on Sunday and 8 deaf.  Here's a picture of our little sign language section.

Some of the friends here were also at our DC in Cambodia last year, and saw my struggle to interpret a couple of pretty difficult talks.  So, when they told me I was on the interpreting schedule for this assembly- a talk on Babylon the Great no less- I was really sure they were only teasing.   But no.  I was kinda surprised to find they were, in fact, completely serious!  So with a long prayer and a short ASL vocab lesson, I think I survived ;)  Actually, I felt privileged to get to help out; and it was a good opportunity to get experience and learn from real interpreters at work.

The kindness and hospitality of the brothers and sisters I met in East Malaysia is legendary.  A special pioneer brother and his wife picked me up at the airport, let me stay at their house, and generously provided an over-abundance of everything I could possibly imagine.  Every day at the assembly, people I had just met had made lunches for me, and even brought me coffee.  In the evening, we were either invited out on the town or to someone's home for an elaborate home cooked meal.  I felt like I had a royal tour of the place.  And when it was time to say goodbye, I left loaded with little cards, gifts and souvenirs from my new friends. I have to say, the physical beauty of Sarawak fades in comparison with the beauty that radiates from within the hearts of  brothers and sisters who live here.

After the assembly was over, a group of us went to the Tolong Senyap National Park, where they have a rehabilitation and breeding center for wild Orangutans.

It's one of the few places in the world where you can sit and watch sights like this unfold. The animals here are by no means tame, but the rangers do leave out food for them, and so they've built-up a tolerance for enthusiastic photographers (as long as you show proper respect for the king!)./ Es unos de los ultimos lugares en el planeta donde te puedes sentar y mirar escenas como estas.

Because we were a big group, and buses to the park are a little sketchy, several local brothers offered their cars.  We also enlisted the help of a brother who owns a taxi.   We had every intention of paying the normal fare for the trip, but when we were finished, he refused to take any money from us. And even insisted on paying for everyone's lunch!  The food was very good, but I gotta say, this area has some of the weirdest combinations I've ever seen.  This is an excerpt from the menu at "My Small Eat Cafe".

It's kind of ironic that the people here are so sweet, because not so very long ago this area was home to the most fierce head-hunting tribes in the world.  This is what the inside of a traditional long-house home looks like.  That's right folks, those are real human skulls dangling from the rafters!

I stayed a week in the south, and then we flew north to the town of Miri; just a stones-throw away from the border of Brunei.  From Miri it's another 30 minute flight on a tiny prop plane into the heart of Borneo.  My destination was Gurung Mulu National Park.  That's where you'll find some of the most pristine jungles left on the planet and the world's largest network of underground caves.

I've been so busy in Phnom Pehn,  I'd forgotten how much I miss being in the forest...

"The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way.   Some see Nature all ridicule and deformity, and some scarce see Nature at all.  But to the eyes of the man of imagination, Nature is Imagination itself." -William Blake, 1799, The Letters

"Keep a green tree in your heart and perhaps a singing bird will come."

"It's not so much for it's beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanates from old tress, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit." -Robert Louis Stevenson

There are a lot of plant and animal species that are endemic to this island, like these giant pitcher plants.   I found a lot of them on my walks; no two plants were the same.

All the critters around here are super-sized too. This giant tree frog was hysterical.  I really think it knew it was posing for a photo shoot.

Stretched-out, this centipede was more than a foot long!

I guess you'd call this a Malaysian house fly? / Supongo que esto se llama mosca malaysiana?

I took so many pictures on this trip, but there's just no way they can do it justice,  These trees are enormous!

"I never saw a discontented tree.  They grip the ground as though they liked it, and though fast rooted they travel about as far as we do.  They go wandering forth in all directions with every wind, going and coming like ourselves, traveling around the sun two million miles a day, and through space heaven knows how far!" " -John Muir

There's a very famous 3-day trek in this park to see some jagged limestone cliffs known as the "pinnacles".  Sadly, I didn't have enough time to go,  but instead I found a mini version to climb around on that was almost a good!

The water in the ponds and rivers here is clear, but it has this bright green (sometimes almost radioactive yellow) looking glow to it.  The color just adds to the mystery... makes you wonder what could be in there...

Because pretty much anything could be in there!  At one of the museums we visited in Kuching, there's an exhibit about things they've found inside crocodile's stomachs;  like wristwatches for example.  Not to worry though...  I'm pretty sure this one was strictly vegetarian.

One of the best views of the forest is the one that usually only birds and butterflies get to see.  The park has a string of catwalks through the canopy more than 400m long and an average of 30m high.  A great place to see a day begin.

The trick was to walk very still, like balancing on a high wire.  Even the slightest swinging or vibrations on the bridges would shake the trees and scares away the animals.  Easier said than done!

The forest was incredible, but the most spectacular and unique part of Mulu are the caves.  This is Deer Cave, which boasts the largest cave passage in the world.  You know that BBC Planet Earth documentary on caves?  The one that shows a cockroach-encrusted pile of bat guano over 100 meteres high...?   Ya, this is the place!

It's hard to tell size from the picture, but this cave passage is big enough to land a jumbo jet inside.

Near the mouth of the cave live an estimated 3 million bats.  How many bats is that?

To help put it into perspective, at dusk, as the bats leave for the night, you can look up at the sky and see them flying like a ribbon across the sky .  This exodus continues, in an almost unbroken stream of bats, for more than an hour!  Sitting there watching, you start to get the feeling that it's never going to end.  Together they can eat 15 tonnes of insects every night.

In total, I spent parts of 3 days exploring a world below the forest floor.  Nearly every inch of it is frosted with colorful, bizzare, and elegant rock formations.  There are plenty of routes here that are well-equipped with lights, stairs, and convenient concrete sidewalks... but for those who don't mind getting a little dirty, there's SO much more to see!

I did a little bit of-  the park calls it "adventure" caving-  It was... what can I say? Super cool!!  One part was a little sketchy though.... it involved walking on tippy toes across the tops of several, very high, stalagmite formations and then repelling into a deep black hole.  The rocks were wet and the old rope slathered with mud; there were no safety lines... ya, it was just a tiny bit scary.

We were supposed to make our way left, and into a shallow crevasse that gave route down to level ground.  But imagine my surprise when I arrived to find that someone else was already hanging out in there.  My options were: A.) Get up-close and personal with this bad boy, or B.) Plummet to my death.  ...I had to stop and think about it for a minute.

Deep inside the caves were tons of bats, swiftlets, snakes, crabs... all sorts of weird little critters that never see the light of day.

Everywhere you look around here, the scenery is so unique and interesting.  I'm sure it'd take a lifetime to explore it all.  If you feel like looking at more of the pictures, you can click moreofmulu / Aqui hay escenas unicas y interesantes por todos lados.

My last day there I spent walking alone in the jungle... after going maybe 3 or 4km I eventually came into a sunny clearing... crossed a road, up a few steps, and into the airport.  (If you can call it an airport)  It's just a thin little building lining one side of a solitary airstrip bulldozed out of the trees.  A few random people were milling around here and there.  Down at one end was something of a cafeteria; so I took a seat at a plastic picnic table and had hot coffee served in a mason jar.  There wasn't an airplane in sight.

So I waited.  One hour... two hours... and then out of nowhere the silence was broken by something with propellers falling from the clouds.  It screamed down the runway, turned around, and then ever so slowly grumbled it's way up to a door painted with the word "departure".  Only one guy in a yellow vest seemed to have noticed it's arrival.  For a moment I was lost.  Like I had stepped into a scene out of an old black and white movie or something.   When... and entire bus load of particularly  loud Chinese tourists descended upon the place and began pushing and shoving their way to the front of the line.  Just like that, the moment was gone and I was back in the South East Asia that's come to feel so familiar to me already.

Back in Miri, there were a few days left to spend with friends.  There is one deaf sister who's lived here for years, and a couple of  "temporary residents" who're working very hard, and doing a great job to build up enthusiasm in the sign language field.  On Sunday we had a Sign Language Watchtower study with about 10 people in attendance.  After that, the rest of the congregation joined us for a special ASL public talk, that was also voiced in Bahasa Malay for the hearing folk.

My friends there were such amazing hosts, and they were so kind to use their time and money to take me sight-seeing everywhere.  We went to the beach, the mountaintops, the historic part of town, and Lambir Hills National Park, where there are some beautiful trails, waterfalls, and a place to swim.

Also on the "To Do" list in Miri:  Go exploring in a Chinese medicine store; Shop for Wasabi seaweed at E-Mart [Pretty much the best place ever! Picture Wal-mart, China Town, and a garage sale all rolled into one!], And practice driving on the "wrong" side of the road. (shifting gears with my left hand and trying to remember not to confuse the blinkers with the windshield wipers! haha ) / Además habia que explorar tiendas de medcinas chinas, mercados interestantes,  y practicar manejar por en lado "equivocado" de la carretera.

The little mushroom in this picture was in the woods, just outside of Miri.  It probably wasn't much bigger than my fingernail and certainly would've been easy enough to have walked right past without ever even having seen it.  There's nothing special about it really.  But I'm glad I did see it.  Sometimes, the most tiny and insignificant things turn out to be the most amazing... and from that amazement we can awaken inspiration.   All we have to do is take the time to look around us with appreciative eyes.
